Una
SPAIN
Una Spain, graduated from G.M.I.T (formerly Galway R.T.C) in 1997 with an honours diploma in Paint & Print. Working primarily with paint, the work consists of building up translucent layers of colour which culminate in a composition in which formal order and painterly expression co-exist within the confines of the painted space. This layering of paint, and the visual depth which it insinuates often contrasts with a variety of textural materials (often sand, string or cloth). This combination of paint and texture manipulated as it is within such compositions bear strong formal resemblances to the American Abstract Expressionists of the 1950’s, most notably Rothko and Newman. Her technique and vision nevertheless remain very much her own. The work presented for this exhibition was created a couple of years back while in The Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Annaghmacarrick under a bursary awarded by Galway County Council. Una has exhibited nationwide and currently lives in Dublin where she is studying for a BA in Photography with D.I.T.
