Deirdre
BREHONY

Deirdre Brehony was born in 1957 in Thurles, Co. Tipperary. She was one of the founding members of Artspace Studios in 1986. An artist whose style varied in its early stages from abstract to being more figurative, Deirdre experimented with different media. Her journey took her from print making to painting vivid images with strong use of colour, shaped in a process without a preconceived idea or subject. Her work featured first at the Ennistymon Arts Festival, Co. Clare in 1984 and at various exhibitions up until 1988 before her tragic death.

Gleigh Gaughan

‘I’m looking at the paintings of Deirdre Brehony, I’m struck by the wonderful colours she uses, but also the images she creates. Sometimes they have a haunting African feel about them, but also something of a joyful folk art carnival with tremendous exuberance. But with all that said her paintings are her own original and personal ideas and have a great strength all of their own.’ John ffrench
