FLANAGAN

Kevin Flanagan is a visual artist and curator. Aged 27, Flanagan is a native Galwegian. He studied Fine Art at the Crawford College of Art in Cork from 2001 -2003 and completed his degree at Cluain Mhuire Galway in 2004. That same year he was involved in founding live art group Enso. Having organised numerous art events and brought much new contemporary art to Galway, Enso have been instrumental in the development of Live art in the city these past few years. As an artist Flanagan works with a wide range of media from drawing to video and performance. His performance work explores issues of responsibility and the meeting of the personal and political. His drawings deal with related issues of haphazard and control. Currently Flanagan is focusing on studio practice and the development of a new series of performance works and drawings.

Much of my work is concerned with haphazard and control. I develop these abstract drawings making fast random repetitive marks, as the page becomes populated, aesthetic relationships develop and forms arise. In response to changes in the aesthetic environment, the pace of mark making slows, becoming more considered. The drawings develop organically in this way. I rotate the paper, working the image from different angles. In this respect there is no top or bottom to the drawings. The choice as to which way the drawing is viewed is left to the observer.
