Mariann
HUGHES BROWNE

Mariann Hughes Browne is a native of Co. Galway and is a visual artist working primarily in the medium of paint. She holds a B.A.A.D and B.A.F.A. ‘Painting’.

Mariann’s paintings explore the tension between abstraction and realism using water as a filter to visually distort and disintegrate the body suspended within it.

In the shallow painted space of her canvases, the subject pushes against our real space, is in itself recognizable as ‘real’ yet becomes abstract through the fractured vibrations of colour and the push and pull of opposites which create a narrative in the painted surface.

I have always been drawn to painting the human figure, and for quite a while I concentrated on that. However I found that I wanted more than just anatomical accuracy in my paintings; I wanted to push reality into abstraction and what better way than painting the figure viewed through a filter. As a keen swimmer and scuba diver the obvious choice for me was water. I have been captivated by it all my life, preoccupied with both being in it, and in observing it. As an artist I am enthralled with its optical effects, it is unpredictable, and complicated in how it refracts light and reflects colours; it is basically a constantly changing lens, melting and disfiguring everything you can see through it. It is a visually infinite fascinating world.
