My work has traditionally been informed by sites and subjects with lost or changing roles and the folklore or historical significance surrounding them. Frequent use of appropriation sees the narrative or symbolism of original source material reinvented as details are removed, extended or repeated to personify or interrelate otherwise inanimate objects. Pattern, surface texture and ornamentation are reconfigured from diverse sources including Renaissance painting, national costume, architectural plans, fashion and the hydraulic systems of pleasure gardens. Working across mixed media wall-based work and installation, I often use rigorous processes to explore the potential of a given medium. I am particularly interested in exploiting materials not normally associated with fine art techniques. Approaches range from decoupage, paper filigree and lace-making to the repetitive stamping of text using a rubber stamp and digitally manipulating drawing for site-specific decoration.
