Gleigh Gaughan

'Wildflowers' and 'Cape Daisies' are part of a series of flower drawings which at first glance resemble prints. The mixed-media technique is similar in some ways to the printmaking process, and these drawings share tightly controlled boundaries. In the initial stage, the motif is painstakingly engraved into paper, but this control is surrendered to a certain degree by entirely covering the drawing in wax and paint. These layers are then scraped away with a sharp blade to reveal the underlying design. It's a cathartic process which introduces uncertainty, accident and instinct to liberate the work from it's original laboured precision.
