I have been working on a series of ‘Shoe painting’. While some of the paintings are in effect a portrait of shoes, the work has evolved into an abstract landscape, where the shoe is an object placed on a ground against a backdrop. The relationship between object and background is at times unclear and the image of the shoe is blurred into being part of the landscape.
I have recently started a series of self-portrait, which aim to explore my relationship to my reflection in the mirror and the act of painting that reflection. While there is a strong element of scrutiny and questioning of the reflection in the mirror, the act of painting inevitably brings with it a process of interpretation. The resulting image of self can be familiar or unfamiliar; the question of likeness and interpretation is raised.
