O'MALLEY

Ciara O'Malley was born in Newtownhamilton, Northern Ireland. She is a multi-media installation artist and studied at Sheffield City Polytechnic, England. She is currently living in Belfast and working freelance in both the North and South of Ireland.

Recently, she is exploring art in context and is creating installations that explore the use of technology and aim to be multi-sensory or interactive as seen in her recent Luas Line Commission ‘Streets’ at Connolly Station – an interactive video/light/sound installation created in collaboration with Sven Anderson (digital technologist and sound artist) and the people of North Inner City Dublin. ‘Streets’ is due to be launched in 2007.

Ciara has received awards, commissions, and residencies and has exhibited throughout Ireland, U.K. and internationally in China, Australia, Japan and in Iceland in 2007.

Since 1990’s I have seen myself primarily as an installation artist, creating installation pieces. Each installation piece is sculptural in nature and comes to life through the use of sound, light, film or movement. The inspiration for these installations has tapped into themes or stories which act as similes for my own experiences and are designed to reach out to audiences on many different levels. More recently, as an installation artist I am interested in creating site-specific pieces that explore art in context and the use of technology in creating multi-sensory, interactive pieces. I aim to open new doors in visual art by using technology to incorporate the use of touch, smell, sound and light which will not only inspire the art viewing public but will make my work more accessible to a broader audience on many sensory levels. At present, I am learning the effective use of digital technology, software applications and specific programming. In time, I aim to develop innovative hard and software applications to choreograph the various sensory elements and their associated technology in order to produce original and hopefully groundbreaking new works.
